Significance Of A Racism Lesson In Pre-schools

By Darcy Deleo

The concept of racism has been in existence since time immemorial. It refers to prejudice or discrimination against a particular group of people. The French revolution of 1792-1802 led to a whole new view or ideology of racism. It can be viewed as a particular race's sense of superiority over another race, that an individual's moral and social behavior is determined by his/her biological features, key being the skin color. This should be the introduction of any racism lesson.

The idea of segregation because of distinction in shade therefore, has emerged in the past few years. This has been hugely caused by the progress of the upgraded community. Therefore, this controversial problem has expounded humankind to be composed of different categories each with an exclusive physical attribute. The categories are believed to have distinct roots. Finally the limitations have public and social importance.

Racism and racial awareness is a very sensitive topic in society. There is no known formula on how to approach this issue, without attracting bashing or misunderstandings from the community. This becomes trickier when adults or parents try to explain the obvious differences between individuals to their young ones. This issue, however sensitive, cannot be wished away. A way to approach this contentious issue of racial lessons and awareness and discussing it not only with kids, but also adults should be sought out.

Silence and ignorance of racial prejudice and racial awareness is not a way of solving this issue. The sooner parents, teachers and guardians introduce this concept to kids when they are still at a tender age, the better. It may be viewed as being racialized in some countries, just by talking about it, but this way of thinking should not be encouraged.

Race of an individual becomes part of his/her life, right from infancy, to puberty and adult life. It is normal therefore, to find children of the different races, aligning or identifying themselves with their respective races. At very tender ages, they begin to notice obvious differences such as skin color, and even cultural differences, and this shapes their views on race.

Concurrent to the prejudice that prevails among United States kids, kids who are coloured think of themselves being of a different national alignment create a white-coloured prejudice. There are various researches that have been innovated by specialists to evidence this fact. One of the extreme researches is the toy research. In accordance to this research, when kids of a different alignment were given white-coloured baby dolls, they freely revealed a white-coloured prejudice.

Evidently, the importance, and need, of a racism lesson can be seen. Racial awareness should be taught in all schools and institutions. As a matter of fact, it should be emphasized at home for children at a early stage.
