Buy Mythology Books For Teens

By Karyn Shields

Myths are a rich source of stories featuring gods and goddesses, heroes and villains, romance, intrigue and strange mythical creatures. Mythology books for teens help to stretch their imagination and introduce them to stories that have had an influence on many areas of present day society such as astronomy, the weather and language to mention a few. Many of these stories are based on classical Greek myths but others come from Norse, Asian, African and other traditions.

Since the beginning of time, people have told stories. Myths gave explanations for inexplicable events such as the creation of the earth. They also contained clues as to the cultural and social issues of the time in which they were told. They often dealt with the good old fight of good against evil and contained moral lessons. The role of the gods played an important role.

Teens are at a stage in their lives where they face many challenges. When truths are written in everyday terms they may be somewhat obscured and do not really make an impact on them. However, put them in the context of a story featuring a beautiful mortal heroine, a capricious god and a terrifying creature and it immediately grabs their attention.

The style in which the most popular stories are written is one that is easy for teens to follow, often including casual slang to which they can relate. Ancient stories become accessible when addressed in a modern way. They may even be written in an amusing way that appeals to an adolescent sense of humor. Teenagers today often know more about the ancient gods and goddesses than their parents as a result of these novels.

Such novels also provide a wonderful escape, enabling the teen to have some respite from all their troubles. They contain all the elements they are looking for such as drama, excitement, romance and fantasy. Some of them are more true to the original stories than others, giving the teen a good understanding of life in other times.

Strange creatures have always played an important part in myths. Who can resist the allure of a Medusa with all those moving snakes around her head? These creatures may be used by authors and placed into modern contexts and stories. Sometimes creatures from different mythological traditions may even be combined or completely new creatures created.

When elements from ancient stories are set in modern times, this creates an interesting tension. It encourages the questioning of topics like love, heroism and much more in a completely different setting. The strikingly beautiful or handsome hero or heroine often faces immense odds and overcomes them.

Many of these novels address the universal and age-old battle of good against evil. A teen may not have to face up to a Minotaur or a Medusa but they have their own challenges to face and can relate to moral battles as they too have choices to make. Reading these novels is not only escapist and entertaining but enlightening and stimulating to the imagination too.
