The 2nd book from the 50 shades of grey trilogy takes off from the first book where Ana and Christian Grey split up. At this time, Ana begins the job at the posting company where she was hired in the previous book. She decides to keep her mind on herself and concentrate on her job. Obviously, Christian had something else in mind. He's so in love with Ana that he was even willing to purchase the publishing company that employed her.
He was going to have complete control of Ana one way or another. He understood that in order for his plan to work, he needed to seize control of her existence. By him controlling everything she did, he could eventually seize control of her. Also, he decides to temporarily put the brakes on the submissive contract, because he recognizes that it did not work in his favor during the first book. All he wanted was Ana and was willing to have her at any cost. This is why he chose not to push the contract. Despite his love for Ana, it was still a very hard thing for him to do because he had the submissive mindset due to his past relationships. He was also extremely secretive on the matter. He focused all his might on hiding his past from Ana. This is why she and her friend at one point thought he was gay. They had never seen him with any women before.
At this point Ana starts to feel very special, because he allowed her to be photographed with him. After a while Ana starts to realize that she is falling madly in love with him. She realizes that it's not just the raw attraction and passion that intrigues her, it's the whole package. As time goes on Christian continues to allow Ana into his life and continues to shower her with expensive gifts. Ana then decides to rekindle the relationship between her and Grey.
Despite Christian's best efforts to keep his past a secret, Ana soon finds out about his submissive encounters, by probing his mother and shrink. To add more gas to the fire, one of Christian's submissive partners ends up paying him an unexpected visit. She comes with the intent to harm him and Ana. It's not really clear as to why she chose to show up, or what exactly it was she was looking for.
The main thing to keep in mind was that she was not happy to see him. Christian's ex even goes as far to paint all over Ana's car and puncture her tires. Things get even worse when Christian comes to find that she's also purchased a gun permit. Ana is now extremely angry and envious towards Grey's ex lover. This forces her to have to decide on whether or not she should continue her relationship with Christian.
