Stem Cell Treatment Centers Offer Many Patients New Hope

By Paul Jones

One can only marvel at the numerous advanced that have been made in the field of medicine during the past decades. Many diseases that were considered an almost certain death sentence and now successfully treated. New techniques and new medicines have helped millions of people to lead healthier and more satisfying lives. No doubt there are many more surprises waiting. Stem cell treatment centers may just be the next very big surprise.

Bone marrow transplants have been done for at least the past thirty years. However, up to now such transplants were only done on patients that suffered from serious blood related diseases such as Leukaemia and other types of cancer related to the blood. Such patients receive chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants aim to repair the devastating effect of the chemical on all cells in the body which are killed indiscriminately.

At present bone marrow transplants still focus mainly on patients suffering from cancer. Researchers are convinced, however, that this type of therapy will soon become commonplace and that it will be a hugely beneficial therapy for a very wide variety of conditions. Before this dream can be realized much still needs to be done to eliminate the potentially dangerous side effects of such therapy

One of the most exciting potential future benefits of bone marrow transplants will be for patients suffering from Alzheimer, Parkinsons and other conditions that severely influence the workings of the brain. It is foreseen that spinal injuries and other types of brain damage will be treated successfully by means of transplants. Even the terrible effects of strokes and seizures will be reversed, allowing patients to resume a normal and satisfying life.

Heart disease remains one of the most common modern medical complaints. Huge strides has been made in the development of new medicines and techniques to effectively deal with a variety of heart related problems. However, when the heart is physically damaged, not much can be done. Researchers are confident that bone marrow transplants will eventually be effective in stimulating the growth of new muscles and blood cells.

Critics of bone marrow transplants abound, however. They point out that, at present, almost all patients receiving a transplant die if the procedure is unsuccessful. They also have serious concerns about the ethics of such transplants, mainly because it is not just bone marrow that is used, but also fluids from the umbilical cord of babies not even born yet. This, they say, can cause serious unethical behaviour.

Critics also question the validity of the claims made by researchers. They say that these claims are completely unsubstantiated and that there is absolutely no proof that bone marrow transplants will indeed become the new wonder cure. They also accuse facilities already offering these transplants of raising false hopes in patients purely in pursuit of making huge profits.

Whether bone marrow transplants will become the latest wonder cure nobody seems to know for sure. If, however, the claims of researchers prove to be true, millions of people will benefit. Mankind is innovative and persistent. Perhaps this will all become true.
